Kayaking Tours, Guides & Travel Destinations
If you’re an inexperienced paddler, or you’re more interested in sightseeing than fine tuning your technical skills, a guided kayaking tour can be a great way to go.
There are many tour companies that will provide both the equipment and enough basic instruction to get even the most novice paddler where he or she wants to go. This can also be a great way to familiarize yourself with a new area and try out various boats and other equipment before you make that all-important buying decision.
Bear in mind that it’s important to find an outfitter who will take the time to tailor the tour and the equipment to the client’s skill level.
And paying more doesn’t necessarily guarantee a better experience. If possible, talk to other paddlers who’ve been on the tour you’re considering. And don’t be shy about calling the outfitter in question and asking about their experience level and whether or not they’re certified through any recognized associations. And speak directly with the tour guide if possible.

Tours & Guides In The Eastern United States
- What will be the theme of the trip? Sightseeing? A clinic on learning new technical skills? An eco-tour that emphasizes beach and ocean ecology?
- How much will it cost? And how much of a deposit will be required?
- What will be the size of the group, and the skill level of the other paddlers?
- What is the company’s safety record?
- What will I need to bring? Get a detailed list of everything you’ll need for this particular tour.
- If this will be a multi-day trip, what food services will be provided? Who will do the cooking, and what kinds of food will be served?
- Listen to the questions that the outfitter asks you. A good tour guide will want to know as much about you as possible, especially if they’ve never worked with you before and they’ll be matching you up with a group of other paddlers.
- And last but not least, what is their cancellation policy?
